If you’re like us, you probably feel like all you’ve been doing for the last few weeks is walk from your kitchen to your living room and occasionally popping to the bedroom for a break! If you’re going to have to spend a few more weeks in self-isolation, why not try to jazz things up with a home makeover?

In this article, we’ll give you some tips about cheap and easy ways to glam up your space in a short amount of time. Along with some Interior design ideas, these easy to implement tricks will do wonders to make you feel more comfortable at home and give your interior a completely different feel.

  1. Spruce up your space for free

The first thing you can do to make your space feel more comfortable is to clean your surfaces, declutter and reorganise your furniture. Not only will it make it easier to find things but it can also help as a cluttered space is likely to trigger stress and anxiety in the long run.

-Clean and declutter:

Keeping surfaces clean is one of the most important things to do if you’re going to spend a lot of time inside. First of all, it helps with clarity, may it be from a career perspective or in your personal life. Besides, waking up to a decluttered and clean space will help you stay motivated throughout the day and enjoy your time home.

-Rearrange the furniture:

Maximising floor space can become crucial if you live in a tiny space or if you live with a number of people. A few things you can do to help maximise space is create a recharge space for electronics to avoid cables dragging on the floor and cluttering your space. You can also use room separators to define spaces i.e. work/home.

-Reorganise your ornaments:

Sometimes it doesn't take much to make a place feel cosier. Change up the colour scheme of your existing ornaments and shuffle them around for a different look.

-Open your windows:

Keeping your windows open on a sunny day to let some fresh air in can change the mood of a space especially if you don’t have a balcony. Grab a comfortable chair, place it in front of the open window and soak in the sun whilst sipping on your favourite autumn drink. Doesn’t get cosier than that ;)

-Organise your working area:

If you can, keep your working area separated from your sleeping area. This will help you separate work from personal time. Clean and well-lit working areas usually encourage more productivity.

-Soothing sounds:

Switch your wireless speaker on, hop onto spotify and look for a relaxing playlist. It could be the sound of rain, thunder, birds, wind or waves. Cosy and peaceful feel guaranteed!

-Light:

How to improve lighting in your house without spending a fortune? It’s actually pretty simple, clean your flyscreens or roman blinds to make sure they’re not blocking any daylight and change your light bulbs. You can go for cool white tones for a productive work area and warmer tones for a winter snuggling ambiance in your living room for instance.

2.Glam up your space with some simple home decor accessories

Now that your space feels decluttered and more spacious, you can make it cosier adding a touch of glamour.  If renovating your bedroom or ordering new furniture isn’t necessarily on the cards at the moment, it doesn’t mean you can’t spice your space with a small budget. Here are some cheap interior design ideas to glam up your home:

-Create an escape corner:

Having to spend most of our time in our home can feel like we’re stuck in a gilded cage sometimes. An easy way to break out of it is by creating a separate corner giving a sense of being in a completely different environment where you can just relax. You don’t need a lot of space to do this. Splitting a small space by separating it with a bookshelf is an easy way to create a little escape corner. You can add a few plants, a couple of faux fur rugs for extra comfort, throw in some pillows and here’s your ideal reading our relaxing space.

Upgrade your dishware:

If you are going to spend three times a day at your kitchen table eating a meal, you might as well upgrade your kitchenware with matching sets to give your takeaway or homemade meals a restaurant feel.

 -Buy simple accessories:

Buying a nice bouquet of colourful flowers once a week or deciding to have a signature candle lit during day time can make your space feel cosier and create a sense of relaxation.  Other small things you can do include burning premium incense or use oil diffusers, to either increase focus or help relieve stress, adding a sense of well-being. If you like fabrics, you can also install curtains to a space or curate luxury linens for your bedroom. To create a warm and luxurious feel, we’d recommend adding some toss pillows and throws to a couch or a bed with carefully selected patterns and fabrics that harmonise.

Accessorise your walls:

Adding some frames to a stairway wall or any white walls can surprisingly level up your space instantaneously.

-Review your lighting:

Lighting can improve your mood and help you feel more comfortable at home.  It is especially important in times like these, where we minimise our time outside and therefore seeing the light. Making sure you have adequate lighting for work but also to relax is crucial. You can choose warm tones to help you unwind, blue light when you want to sleep or bright fairy lights around the window for a romantic feel. Think about floor lamps or sconces as well in order to spice up the walls and give the room a more sophisticated look. Soft gold and industrial styles are trendy in 2020.

-Create an entryway:

In such a stressful time, it can be a good idea to organise an area in your entryway that would be used as some kind of ‘’ drop zone ‘’. Adding a couple of hangers, a small shelf and a shoe rack means that you can now shed your protective clothing, getting rid of your shoes, masks, and clothes after you’ve been out, to slip into more comfortable, clean loungewear. Make sure you hang a pair of nice pyjamas and comfortable slippers the next time you’re planning to go out so you feel relaxed once back in your home.

  1. Small DIY projects

Nothing better than a home DIY project to keep busy and create a new interior feel during a pandemic! Below are some home decor ideas you can try:

-Experiment with removable wallpapers:

Tired of these white walls but not sure whether the landlord would appreciate you repainting the whole space? You can now buy removable wallpapers and give your space a totally different feel. From tropical leaves to grey linen, removable wallpapers can cater to any one of us. Some budget options can be found on Etsy.

-Repaint some of rooms:

Even though the idea is to keep it simple, repainting a couple of rooms can completely transform your space and make it cosier. For a high-end luxury feel, we’d recommend olive greens or jewel toned colours. For something more casual we’d go for rich bronzes. If you’re feeling like you want to add a touch of sophistication to one of the well-lit rooms, we’d go with moody hues such as hail navy.

-Refurbish your furniture

Home improvement doesn’t necessarily mean you need to alter the walls or the existing features of your house or apartment. You could simply refurbish some of your old furniture to either give it a fresh, vintage, more casual or more sophisticated look. Dark matte finished, bright lacquered pulls and chalk paint are some of the latest trends when it comes to jazzing up your furniture.

We hope this article will help awaken the creative mind in you and give you confidence that you can achieve a beautiful and cosy interior feel on a budget and pretty quickly. Plus, once the pandemic is over, you’ll be delighted to show your new space to your friends.
